Nagpur: With lakhs of Buddhist devotees set to converge at Deekshabhoomi on Tuesday for the 70th Dhammachakra Pravartan Day celebrations, the district administration has introduced several measures to ensure a safe and hassle-free experience, including 25,000 identification wristbands for children, a ₹15 crore insurance cover for temporary shelters and, for the first time, dedicated accommodation facilities at 24 locations. Nearly 25,000 bands have been procured, carrying the names and mobile numbers of parents. In another first, the administration has arranged accommodation for outstation devotees at 24 locations. The accommodation facilities have also been provided with a ₹15 crore insurance cover, comprising ₹10 crore for untoward incidents at shelters and ₹5 crore specifically for fire-related incidents. Meanwhile, over 1,235 toilets have been arranged across the ITI premises, Mata Kacheri and prison grounds.

One of the key initiatives this year is the introduction of identification wristbands for children to prevent them from getting lost in the massive crowds. As devotees from across the country began arriving in the city, collector Kumar Ashirwad reviewed the final preparations and directed nodal officers to remain present at their assigned locations to ensure smooth operations. Students from social welfare department hostels will tie these bands around children’s wrists at various entry routes leading to Deekshabhoomi, enabling quicker reunification if children get separated from their families. The shelters, which can accommodate thousands, will provide bedding, blankets, drinking water, electricity, sanitation and grievance redressal facilities. Round-the-clock drinking water supply and regular cleaning of toilets have been prioritised to manage the anticipated footfall. Crowd management, traffic arrangements, CCTV surveillance, medical facilities and control rooms are also being operationalised. NDRF and SDRF teams have been included in emergency response planning, while firefighting arrangements have been made at shelters. Ashirwad also interacted with volunteers deployed around Deekshabhoomi, emphasising their role in guiding devotees, addressing difficulties and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere throughout the celebrations. At a review meeting held at Niyojan Bhavan, attended by additional collector Pravin Mahire, assistant commissioner of social welfare Sukeshini Telgote and departmental nodal officers, Ashirwad instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted water supply, regular sanitation and timely completion of all remaining arrangements as the city prepares for one of its largest annual religious congregations.
