Lucknow: Acting on an alert received from Meta, Ghaziabad Police reached the home of a 24-year-old man within eight minutes and prevented a suicide attempt after he posted a video indicating suicidal intent on Instagram , Uttar Pradesh Police said.
Social Media Centre at Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters received an email alert from Meta at 2:07 am, according to police.
Police said the man uploaded a video along with a message stating, “I don’t want to live my life, so I am going to hang myself. Investigators said the post was made amid financial difficulties that had left him under severe mental stress. A team from Link Road police station—sub-inspector Ranjit Kumar, head constable Pradeep Kumar and constable Rohitash Kumar—was dispatched and reached the residence within eight minutes, police said. During questioning, he told police he worked at a tailoring shop and was struggling to manage household expenses. Police said the man later assured them he would not take such a step.
The headquarters then informed senior officers and began steps to trace the user’s location. On the directions of Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna, Social Media Centre used the mobile number included in the alert to identify the man’s location and passed the information to Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate. The police moved him away from the room, spoke to calm him, and counselled him until he regained composure. His family thanked the officers for the rapid response.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the jurisdiction of Link Road police station in Ghaziabad.
Police said they found a rope fashioned into a noose hanging from a ceiling fan. On arrival, the officers informed the family about the Instagram post and went to the man’s room. The man was looking at his phone, mumbling, and appeared highly distressed, leading officers to suspect he was about to act.
