The campaign was aimed at ensuring early diagnosis and preventing spread of the disease
Kolhapur: As many as 20 new leprosy cases were detected in Kolhapur district during a special leprosy survey campaign conducted between Sept 16 and Oct 31. All 20 patients have been examined and immediately started on treatment. Dr Hemlata Palekar, assistant director, health services (leprosy), said, “The aim is to bring the spread of leprosy down to zero by 2027.
The health officials said that as part of the campaign, health workers also examined people who had come in contact with leprosy patients diagnosed in the district over the past five years. The campaign was aimed at ensuring early diagnosis and preventing spread of the disease. Against this backdrop, citizens should immediately visit a govt hospital for examination if they notice any of these symptoms. Early diagnosis and regular treatment can effectively control the disease.”
