Because the bridge is a crucial connecting link, locals are wary of travelling over the bridge, but have no alternative.

Rajesh Bankar, chief engineer of PMC’s road department, said, “The work has been halted as the canal’s water level is higher for us to launch a girder. We would need new tenders for the same,” Bankar said. Maruti Tupe, local councillor, said, “At present, the lane from Sasanenagar to Hadapsar was at a higher level, and the one from Hadapsar to Sasanenagar remained at a lower level. However, I would push the contractor to expedite the work,” Tupe said. Swarali Deshmukh, a resident, said, “The bridge was very old, but it has been the only connecting point for residents from Hingane Mala, Sasanenegar, Kalepadal and the nearby areas to reach Hadapsar.
Thousands of people use it every day to commute in areas including Sasanenagar, Kale Padal, Mohammedwadi and Sayyednagar to Hadapsar and the Solapur highway. The work on the pile caps on the embankments has been completed. “The girder was being built at a nearby ground. Once the water recedes to a safe level, we will resume work. The work was delayed as the locals wanted us to repair all three lanes of the bridge, which were currently at different heights. We cannot, however, extend the current tender. Bankar further added that it would take at least two months to finish the work once the launching begins, which was likely to happen only after the monsoon. The locals were asking that the entire bridge be at the same level. Hence, we were planning to lower the level of one side of the bridge. “This change in plan took a lot of time, as we needed to get all the permissions. As there is no alternate route to cross the canal in the area, vehicular movement remained uninterrupted despite the bridge’s compromised strength. Hence, thousands of vehicles pass over that bridge every single day. It was a huge risk, PMC must complete the work fast. Download the TOI App.
