Mumbai: Continuing its action against establishments that have not installed Marathi signboards as per the Supreme Court order, officials of BMC’s shops and establishments department inspected a total of 9,798 establishments across 10 wards and issued notices to 294 of them between Aug 20 and Sept 9. Karkar added that after BMC issued a notice to Badshah Cold Drink Depot and imposed a fine of Rs 9,000, the establishment put up a new board displaying both English and Devanagari scripts in equal font sizes. “In the second phase of the drive, the focus has been on major roads, including S V Road, L B S Marg and Link Road, besides the Eastern and Western Express Highways,” said Diksha Karkar, chairperson of law, revenue and general purposes committee. The issue of Marathi name boards had come back in focus in May, with corporators raking up the matter by pointing out that the civic administration has been lax in implementing the Supreme Court order during a meeting of BMC’s law, revenue and general purposes committee. Members of the committee had pointed out that several establishments, including star hotels and rooftop restaurants owned by celebrities, besides MNC establishments, have only English name boards and do not display Marathi boards.
