The completion of the Sion Road Overbridge (ROB) hinges on receiving approval from the traffic police to close the Dharavi Road Overbridge. This closure is necessary for the reconstruction of the Dharavi bridge. Once the approach works are finalized and coordination with relevant authorities is established, the Sion ROB will be opened to traffic.
Each of the two girder assemblies weighed around 500 tonnes. Following the launch and lowering of the girders onto permanent supports, Central Railway completed the deck slabs and remaining railway span works. The railway span scope is now complete in all respects. The longer single-span arrangement creates the space required for the proposed additional railway lines under the MUTP project. Girder launching operations were undertaken in stages during June and August. The work required close coordination between construction, operating and electrical departments. Critical activities were carried out during planned traffic and power blocks, with temporary supporting arrangements and careful sequencing to ensure safe execution around railway operations. The bridge reconstruction involved dismantling the old structure, building foundations, fabricating steel girders and launching them across railway tracks. Their handling and placement required detailed engineering planning and execution above the operational railway corridor.
The reconstructed railway portion features a 54.5-metre single span with an overall width of 29 metres. It comprises two semi-through steel girder assemblies with reinforced cement concrete deck slabs, supported on 1,200mm-diameter pile foundations and pile caps. The single-span design replaces the earlier two-span structure. The longer single-span arrangement replaces the earlier two-span configuration and provides the space required for the proposed additional railway lines.
Bridge Completion Expected by September 30
The Sion ROB, which missed its August 15 deadline, is now expected to be completed by September 30. Approach works being executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are currently in progress. The bridge will open to road traffic after these works and the required arrangements with authorities are completed. Central Railway has completed all works pertaining to the railway span of the reconstructed Sion Road Overbridge (ROB). The milestone advances the CSMT-Kurla fifth and sixth railway lines project under MUTP-II B and brings the restoration of east-west road connectivity at Sion closer to reality.
