Kolhapur : The civic body, In a fortnight-long crackdown on civic violations, fined 222 people and collected Rs 2.8 lakh between Sept 1 and Sept 15, targeting littering, plastic use, public spitting and illegal waste dumping. Authorities collected Rs 1.5 lakh from 113 residents and business establishments. Another Rs 94,300 was recovered from 83 people for littering in public places. Deputy commissioner Paritosh Kankal said the civic body also fined 19 people Rs 11,300 for smoking, urinating or spitting in public, while seven people were penalised Rs 22,500 for dumping debris on roads.
The drive was carried out by the nuisance detection squad of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) under a special cleanliness campaign launched by the health and solid waste management department on the directions of municipal commissioner Dr Rajendra Bharud.
“As part of the action, fines collected included Rs 1,50,350 from 113 citizens and business owners for plastic use; Rs 94,300 from 83 citizens for littering in the open; Rs 11,300 from 19 individuals for smoking, urinating, or spitting in public places; and Rs 22,500 from seven individuals for dumping debris on the roads,” Kankal said. KMC said the campaign aims to improve cleanliness, curb public nuisance and instill greater civic responsibility among residents. The biggest share of penalties came from action against plastic use. Officials warned that repeat offenders could face criminal action if warranted. The civic body has also appealed to residents to hand over daily waste only to authorised garbage collection vehicles and avoid unlawful disposal practices.

“Penal action will be taken in accordance with applicable rules and relevant laws against anyone found spitting in public places, burning waste in the open, dumping garbage on roads or in drains, or violating regulations regarding the use of plastic,” Kankal added. Download the TOI App.
