E-Rickshaws Have Free Run On 12 Banned Routes

Nagpur: E-rickshaws continue to swarm the city despite restrictions imposed in 2016 and reiterated in 2022, exposing the failure of enforcement agencies to implement the Regional Transport Authority’s (RTA) diktat. The latest crackdown order prohibiting e-rickshaws on 12 roads signals a renewed attempt by traffic police to enforce the existing restrictions. The RTA, headed by the district collector, first imposed the restrictions in 2016 and reiterated them in 2022.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar said violators would face strict action. He clarified that the move was aimed at enforcing existing orders and did not amount to a fresh ban. However, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Nagpur city, headed by Kiran Bidkar, and traffic police have failed to ensure compliance, allowing e-rickshaws to operate on prohibited roads. The continued violations also raise questions about coordination between the two enforcement agencies.
