In a letter to the BMC commissioner, Narwekar welcomed the civic body’s initiative to upgrade 34 key footpaths spanning more than 17 km in A Ward. “Unfortunately, due to heavy encroachment by hawkers, there is virtually no space left for pedestrians and tourists to walk safely, causing severe congestion and safety hazards.
However, Narwekar said Colaba Causeway and Kala Ghoda also required urgent attention as footpaths along the stretches are occupied by stalls and hawkers, leaving little space for pedestrians. He said the situation often forces pedestrians and tourists to walk on the carriageway, creating safety concerns and adding to congestion. Making these two iconic roads pedestrian-friendly by clearing the footpaths will significantly boost the global image of Mumbai and ensure public safety,” Narwekar said.
Mumbai: BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has urged the BMC to include Shahid Bhagat Singh Road (Colaba Causeway) and Mahatma Gandhi Road (Kala Ghoda) as priority stretches under its ‘Pedestrian First’ policy, citing encroachments and lack of walking space along the two prominent south Mumbai stretches. He particularly pointed to the inclusion of high-footfall stretches such as St George Street, Dr DN Marg, Hajarimal Somani Marg, Maharshi Karve Marg and IMC Marg.
