Navi Mumbai: After his seven-day-old granddaughter died while under treatment for jaundice, a 59-year-old man allegedly slapped a doctor even as 10-odd people who accompanied him ransacked the reception of a private hospital in Khopoli in Raigad district on Tuesday. Khopoli police registered an FIR against the grandfather and eight to 10 unidentified persons for allegedly assaulting the doctor and damaging hospital property. Dr Jayant Kejriwal gave the child a commonly used herbal medication for the liver, but her condition continued to deteriorate and she died around 12.30pm, according to police. Hire said police registered the ADR on a complaint by Wande under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita which outlines the procedure to investigate unnatural, sudden or suspicious deaths.
Khopoli senior inspector Sachin Hire said Hussain Wande, a resident of Ajivali village in Khalapur taluka, had accompanied his daughter, Shahista Jalgaonkar, to Sumitraj Kejriwal Hospital at Shastrinagar in Khopoli with her seven-day-old daughter Ariba, who had been diagnosed with jaundice. “The postmortem report from JJ Hospital is awaited,” he said. Police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and sought the newborn’s postmortem report from a panel of doctors at JJ Hospital in Byculla. Wande allegedly blamed the doctor for the death, claiming that his granddaughter had been incorrectly diagnosed and treated. In a fit of rage, he allegedly slapped Dr Kejriwal, following which the people accompanying him allegedly turned violent and ransacked the hospital reception, causing damage to property.
