Nashik: Zilla Peth police arrested two men on Friday for allegedly climbing the boundary wall of Jalgaon District Jail and bursting firecrackers to celebrate the birthday of an undertrial prisoner.
Jalgaon SP Shrikant Dhivare said the incident took place on Aug 20. The accused fled after bursting the firecrackers, but a video of the act was uploaded on social media and went viral on Aug 26, prompting police action. Zilla Peth police booked the accused under Section 326(g) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with causing damage to a human dwelling or a place used for storing property by fire or an explosive substance. The offence carries imprisonment for life, or imprisonment of up to 10 years, and a fine.
Three others are wanted in the case, and police have launched a search for them. The probe revealed that the fireworks were allegedly set off to celebrate the birthday of an undertrial prisoner in judicial custody in connection with a murder case registered at Shanipeth police station.
Police said the firecrackers were burst near the jail boundary wall, with sparks entering the premises and posing a potential threat to inmates and the property. Police identified the arrested men as Vicky Shinde and Shubham Jadhav . A case was subsequently registered.
