Jaykheda police inspector Sagar Kale said the tragedy occurred between 1.30pm and 2pm at a barrage on Mausam river. Divers were pressed into service, and after a search operation lasting around 30-45 minutes, their bodies were recovered, the officer said.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the group’s visit to the barrage were being investigated. Police identified the deceased as Rutik Dadaji Wagh of Nampur Charphata and Atharva Deepak Pagar of Utrane village. Both were Std XII students. Police received information that two boys had drowned and rushed to the spot. Preliminary information suggested that the boys had accompanied fellow students from their coaching class for Ganapati idol immersion. Rutik and Atharva reportedly remained at the site to swim and subsequently drowned While the rest of the group left after the ritual. Witnesses alerted police after noticing the two struggling in the water. An accidental death case has been registered at Jaykheda police station.
