Police on Saturday questioned the juvenile accused in the murder of an elderly man in Alappuzha

Nashik: A 50-year-old woman was killed and two others were seriously injured when a speeding car hit them on Chalisgaon-Malegaon road near Bilakhed village around 9.30pm on Tuesday, prompting residents to stage a road blockade demanding safety measures.

Sushilabai Jadhav (50) died on the spot, while villagers who arrived at the scene after the accident rushed the two injured women to hospital.

Police said the three Bilakhed women were taking a post-dinner walk when the Chalisgaon-bound car struck them. The driver was also injured and admitted to hospital, an officer said. Tension prevailed at Chalisgaon city police station through the day as villagers pressed their demand for financial assistance. Additional police personnel were deployed on Chalisgaon-Malegaon highway to manage traffic and maintain law and order.

Inspector Amitkumar Manel said an FIR would be registered after the victim’s family formally lodged a complaint, following which legal action would be initiated against the driver. Residents alleged reckless driving and speeding had become frequent on the highway. Their rasta roko caused severe congestion in both directions as they demanded safety measures, action against the driver and financial assistance for Jadhav’s family. Police later persuaded protesters to clear one lane, allowing limited two-way traffic movement.
