Thane: The Thane Coastal Road-1 project has crossed the 40% completion milestone in 14 months, with foundation work, pier-cap casting and I-girder erection progressing rapidly across the corridor, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said. As of Sept 2, 40% of the project work had been completed, according to MMRDA. Around 77% of the working piles, or 332 of 426, have been completed, while 65% of the piers, or 277 of 426, and 460 pier caps have already been cast. I-girder erection is also progressing rapidly, with 501 of 1,632 girders, approximately 30%, already erected. In addition, 13 deck-slab spans have been completed, MMRDA said. The 13.45-km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor between Kharegaon Toll Naka and Gaimukh is being constructed using advanced engineering techniques.
MMRDA said the project is the first greenfield road project in India to use a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land.
Designed as a strategic freight corridor, the project is expected to decongest Ghodbunder Road and improve connectivity between NH-160, or the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, and Gaimukh along the Thane Creek coastline. The project comprises a 240-metre-long creek bridge and an 8.11-km elevated road passing through mangrove areas. A 40-45 metre-wide Development Plan road has been reserved for the project, facilitating segregation of local and inter-city traffic on Ghodbunder Road. The corridor will also integrate with the Thane Ring Metro, Thane Coastal Road-2, Saket-Amane Elevated Corridor and Kasarvadavali-Kharbhav Road.

The corridor will provide faster, safer and more convenient connectivity for traffic travelling towards Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Gujarat and North India.
