Kolhapur : Commuters travelling on the Sangli-Solapur stretch of NH-166 will have to shell out more from Friday as toll charges at the Ichgaon toll plaza have been revised upward for the second time this year — an increase of 4.5% over the rates introduced six months ago. Under the revised rates, cars and other light vehicles will pay Rs 105 for a one-way trip. The toll for buses has been fixed at Rs 170, trucks at Rs 355, heavy vehicles at Rs 555 and multi-axle vehicles at Rs 675. Toll collection on the Sangli-Solapur highway corridor began in 2022 at three plazas, and since then toll rates have risen by nearly 40%. Vikas Deshmukh, who frequently travels from Kolhapur to his native place in Dharashiv, said he paid around Rs 320 in toll for a single journey during his last visit.
Swapnil Kasar, project director, NHAI Solapur, said the revisions were carried out in accordance with existing guidelines. Various factors are taken into consideration before the revision is implemented,” he said. The rates are revised too frequently and should remain unchanged for at least two years,” he said.
The route is heavily used by passengers travelling between Sangli and Solapur, particularly for religious tourism. “Toll rates are revised once every six months. Motorists travelling the entire 203km stretch between Sangli and Solapur are required to pay toll at three plazas — Borgaon in Sangli district and Ankadhal and Ichgaon in Solapur district. Toll is collected for 78km at Borgaon, 60km at Ankadhal and 78km at Ichgaon. The recurring hikes have drawn criticism from regular users. “The highway has certainly made travel smoother and reduced fuel consumption. But the savings are offset by rising toll charges.
Return journeys completed within a day attract a 25% discount, while monthly pass holders receive a 33% concession. Non-commercial vehicle owners residing within a 20-km radius of the toll plaza can avail a monthly pass for Rs 360, up from Rs 340 earlier and Rs 315 when toll collection commenced in 2022.
