Nagpur: A meeting convened to finalise divorce papers and settle marital disputes turned violent on Monday evening, leaving two men seriously injured after an alleged knife attack near the Collector’s Office in the Sadar police station area.
The incident occurred around 6pm when members of two families gathered to discuss divorce proceedings and the return of jewellery and other articles exchanged during the marriage. What began as a settlement meeting soon escalated into a heated argument between the two sides.
Police said that as the discussion heated up, Mayur Bhagat (40) picked up a knife and attacked Ravindra Lohkare (60), striking him on the head. When Ravindra’s relative, Rangnath Lohkare (44), attempted to intervene, Bhagat allegedly stabbed him in the stomach. Complainant Suman Pusate, a relative of the man seeking divorce, was present during the meeting along with her family members and the seven accused, according to police. Police said further investigations are under way to ascertain the precise role of each accused and circumstances leading to the attack. Other accused persons allegedly joined the assault and attacked the two victims with punches and kicks. Both injured men, residents of Karanji village in Yavatmal district’s Pandharkawada tehsil, were rushed for medical treatment. The Sadar police have registered a case against Bhagat, his wife, younger brother and several other relatives in connection with the attack. The accused have been charged with attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt and offences committed by several persons acting with a common intention.
