Only 62.07% of useful live storage is left in a total of 287 major, medium and minor dams in the division, according to the latest report. During the same period last year, most dams had more than 95% storage. Amravati: With the monsoon season ending, the water storage situation in dams across Amravati division remains grim. With deficient rainfall this year, western Vidarbha is likely to face a severe water scarcity crisis in the coming summer.

The division’s nine major projects hold only 59.52% of live storage. Upper Wardha (Nal Damayanti Sagar) dam, which provides water to Amravati city and the district, currently has only 58.42% storage; on the same day last year, the storage was as high as 99.34%. The situation of Khadakpurna project in Buldhana district is extremely critical, with only 3.77% live storage left. Last year, the same project had 95.96% water available. Katepurna dam in Akola has only 18.58% water stock, whereas on this day last year the dam was filled to full capacity (100%). The division’s 27 medium projects have recorded 68.09% water storage. Among them, Saikheda and Waghadi projects in Yavatmal district are 100% full, with discharge ongoing through spillways. Chandrabhaga (98.44%) and Purna (97.46%) dams in Amravati district are in good condition. However, the 251 minor projects in the division have an average of only 60.91% water stock left, indicating a looming crisis for irrigation and drinking water in rural areas.
