25 cattle transported for slaughter without proper documents rescued near Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai. Cattle being transported illegally to Keralam for slaughter were rescued.

Chennai: As many as 25 cattle being transported to Kerala for slaughter in inhumane conditions and without proper documents were rescued by police officers and animal welfare activists near Maraimalai Nagar on Saturday. The truck was then raided by a police team, and all 25 cattle were sent to a govt goshala for immediate care. A senior police officer confirmed that the drivers did not possess a ‘fit-to-transfer’ certificate issued by the animal husbandry dept.

I informed police and filed a complaint” he said. A certificate from a veterinarian, after examining the animals, the wound and their age, is required for further action — against the driver and the employer,” the officer said. The animals have been sent to a govt-run shelter and police are awaiting a certificate from the veterinarian for further action. “Cow dung and urine were leaking from the vehicle and I could see that the animals were cramped inside. There was no provision for food or drinking water, no adequate ventilation, and the animals were struggling to breathe — contrary to govt rules for slaughter transport. “The drivers admitted that the cattle were being transported for slaughter.

The seizure was carried out on a complaint from animal welfare activist Sai Vignesh, who stumbled upon the truck parked near Maraimalai Nagar on Saturday evening. A police constable said the veterinarian’s report was likely to be submitted on Monday.
