Kottayam : CPM ’s extended Kottayam district committee has decided to act against functionaries who have defaulted on cooperative bank loans.
Party sources said five office-bearers’ positions are now in question, and the committee has reportedly asked them to clear their dues by Oct 30.
The five are district secretariat and district committee members, sources said. A few delegates blamed the party’s defeat in Pala assembly segment on the cooperative sector crisis, sources said. Some delegates said the committee had not discussed the defeats in Kottayam, Puthuppally and Ettumanoor specifically.
Four of them reportedly owe relatively small amounts. Some delegates demanded that anyone failing to repay be removed from their committee posts. There was also a call for stricter oversight of party office-bearers’ financial dealings. The meeting also saw self-criticism, with members conceding that area committees had not risen to the occasion during the assembly elections. They also raised concerns about traditionally loyal workers-voters drifting away and grassroots members leaving the party.
