Kozhikode : Fathima (56), a resident of Lakkippadi in Kizhakke Chathalloor, was killed in a wild boar attack at Othayi in Edavanna that also left four others injured on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 5.15am when she was walking to a nearby mosque to attend the dawn prayer. The injured were identified as PT Mohammed Ali (50), a resident and teacher at Mundengara Govt LP School, Kuniya Mannan Hameed (58), V P Abdullah (55) and Ummar Kutty (55).

The condition of one of the injured is serious. Hearing her screams, people who had arrived at the mosque rushed to her rescue. As they tried to fend off the animal, the wild boar attacked four more people. Ali’s condition is serious. The wild boar first attacked Abdullah, who was on his way to the mosque. He managed to escape by running into his house. The animal subsequently attacked Fathima, inflicting severe injuries on her head and other parts of the body. She died before she could be taken to a hospital. The injured were admitted to Manjeri Medical College Hospital and a private hospital in Areekode. Residents later caught the wild boar, which was shot dead under the supervision of the panchayat’s designated shooter. After receiving alerts, Edavanna Police and forest department officers reached the spot and initiated further action.

PWD minister P K Basheer, who visited her house, said that govt will take up the responsibility for treating the injured. Residents said multiple people had narrowly escaped similar attacks in the past. They said the area has rubber, cashew and coconut plantations, while wild boars have made rubber plantations with thick overgrowth their habitat.
