HC directs officials to make fountain at ECO park in Madurai functional
Madurai: Madras high court has directed Madurai corporation officials to make the fountain inside ECO park at the corporation office complex functional. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by C Jaya Selva Pandian, R Chandrasekaran, F Ahmed Shamoon, B Ananth and K Sundaralingam. The petitioners sought a direction to the authorities to maintain ECO park as a space for people to relax and as a vital green lung space. They also sought a direction to the authorities to prevent the occupiers from converting it into an amusement park and allow the public and walkers to use the park in the morning and evening without entry fees.
The case was posted for hearing on Sept 16.
As a first step, the fountain, which is in the middle of the park, must be made functional, the bench said. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel observed that the petition is kept pending and it will be ensured that ECO park is maintained.
