Former state DGP Tomin J Thachankary was sent to Thiruvananthapuram central prison after the court proceedings
The issues between Thachankary and Bobby’s family traces back to Oct 1990, when Thachankary was serving as assistant superintendent of police in Alappuzha. Following this, Kuruvila filed a complaint in 1995 alleging that Thachankary had accumulated assets disproportionate to his known income, citing among other evidence an advertisement for a music event organised by Thachankary that had appeared in a Malayalam newspaper in the United States during his police service.
A subsequent complaint to director general of police led crime branch to take over the investigation, which found the attempted-murder allegation to be false, according to the family. K L Kuruvila and his sons Bobby and Alexander were charged with attempted murder following a clash with a relative of Thachankary, in which police alleged that they had brandished a firearm.
Kottayam : It was a 36-year-old legal battle pursued by the Karivelithara family of Mithrakari in Alappuzha that resulted in the vigilance court verdict against former DGP Tomin J Thachankary.
Bobby reportedly moved Kerala High Court with 12 separate writ petitions, and the matter was also heard by Supreme Court . Vigilance department eventually restricted its probe to the period between Jan 2003 and July 2007, registering a case in 2007. Raids were conducted at six locations, and the investigation concluded in 2013 with a chargesheet filed before Thrissur vVigilance court.
Kuruvila died during the course of the legal proceedings, but his sons continued to pursue the case. The case was later transferred to Muvattupuzha and subsequently to Kottayam, where it was heard until Thursday’s verdict.
