Kerala HC relief for 17 Sanskrit varsity students — Symbolic funeral of VC

Kochi : The high court has directed that the 17 students of Kalady Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit who had allegedly conducted a symbolic funeral of the vice-chancellor and also restrained her, be not arrested till Sept 11.

On Aug 13, the petitioners and others, all SFI activists, unlawfully assembled on the campus and staged a symbolic funeral procession for the varsity vice-chancellor Ciza Thomas, according to the prosecution. It was further alleged that thereafter, the petitioners and other identifiable persons wrongfully restrained and confined Thomas, her staff members and syndicate members while they were leaving after attending a syndicate meeting. They allegedly pushed, assaulted and caused hurt to them. Later, the police registered a case based on a complaint filed by Thomas against the petitioners, prompting them to approach the HC seeking pre-arrest bail. Download the TOI App.

The bench further sought instructions from the state on the bail application and adjourned the case to Sept 11. A bench of Justice Kauser Edappagath issued the interim order in response to a pre-arrest bail petition filed by the students, including Archana P S of Palakkad, Abhijith K V of Ernakulam, and Rithisha of Kottayam.
