Kochi : Rajya Sabha MP C Sadanandan has met Union minister for heavy industries and public enterprises H D Kumaraswamy to demand a comprehensive revival package for the Kalamassery unit of HMT Machine Tools Ltd.

During the meeting in New Delhi, the MP highlighted the severe financial and operational hurdles currently crippling the Kerala facility. He stressed that the Kalamassery unit holds a pivotal place in India’s manufacturing ecosystem, backed by state-of-the-art technical infrastructure and a highly skilled workforce. To secure the plant’s long-term viability, Sadanandan urged the central govt to deliver immediate working capital, execute modernisation plans, boost production orders and resolve pending employee grievances. He emphasised that timely govt support is crucial to safeguarding workers’ interests and restoring the unit’s manufacturing output. Kumaraswamy assured the MP that the ministry would review the Kalamassery unit’s challenges favourably and take appropriate steps toward its restructuring. The MP affirmed that he will continue pressing the ministry for swift implementation to protect jobs and revitalise the industrial hub. The Kalamassery unit is crippled by a financial crisis and working capital shortage, forcing drastic production cuts and project delays. Despite having active order books worth tens of crores, the public sector unit lacks the funds required to procure raw materials. Download the TOI App.
