Kochi: The proposed Kochi Metro Phase III connecting Aluva to Angamaly via Kochi airport will be fully elevated, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) clarified on Wednesday.
“As per the final DPR submitted to the state govt, the proposed 18.09km corridor is designed as a fully elevated structure from Aluva to Angamaly via the airport. It will feature 14 stations,” a KMRL official said. including a three-km underground segment from Kariyad to the airport, the same was dropped to cut the overall project cost While the feasibility study featured four alignment options.
Outgoing KMRL managing director Loknath Behera said if the DPR gets state and central approvals this year, the line is targeted for completion by 2031. Work on Metro Phase II, connecting Infopark with JLN Stadium Metro station via Kakkanad, remains on track for completion as per the revised deadline of Aug 2027. “Unless unexpected technical delays arise, authorities plan to inaugurate the line on Independence Day next year,” a Metro official said. The proposed alignment skips Angamaly railway station after the Kochi airport, and instead is planned via Nayathode, Kavarapparambu, Arikkal Jn, Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly Town, Kothakulangara and Karayamparambu. The alignment will run adjacent to a new commercial complex being built by Cochin International Airport Ltd and the airport station is slated to come near Taj Hotel, located 300m from the airport terminal.
