Madurai Eco Park, one of the biggest green spaces in the city, has become practically an amusement park, as the contractor responsible for its maintenance and upkeep has cut down several trees in order to set up rides and food stalls.
He said grass had dried up in many parts of the park due to lack of regular watering and upkeep.
“Many people come here to appreciate the beauty of the park, and for daily walks, but it has become like a fairground, that people pay tickets to enter,” said Bhoominathan, president of Eco Park Walkers Club. “It’s not just the broken fountain that needs maintenance and attention,” he said. Lack of maintenance of plant life and greenery at the 5.5 acre park, located behind the corporation head office, has become a sore point for visitors. Waste from food stalls was strewn all over the park, and lack of enough dustbins also meant that regular waste disposal was not happening .
Multiple complaints had been received earlier over the lack of attention to regular maintenance and cleaning.
