THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A one-and-a-half-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her mother, who slit the child’s throat at Malayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram district, police said. The child, however, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, police said. Police said preliminary information suggested that family issues may have led to the alleged murder.

Neighbours rushed to the house and found the child with a severe injury to her neck. They took her to a nearby primary health centre, from where she was shifted to SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. During preliminary questioning, Christy allegedly admitted to killing her daughter. However, the exact reason behind the alleged act was not immediately clear. Police registered a murder case against Christy based on a complaint filed by her mother-in-law, Gerly.

The incident took place on Thursday evening after a neighbour heard cries coming from the family’s house. The accused will be produced before a court on Friday as part of the remand procedure, police said. The child’s body will be handed over to the family after completion of the required procedures on Friday.

Abhijith and Christy had been married for four years and Anna was their only child. The child’s grandmother also lived with the family.
