The two four-lane national highways together cover 66km and cost Rs2,343 crore, according to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Rs 1,025-crore Vadipatti–Thamaraipatti stretch of NH-744A forms a 30km section of Madurai’s ring road. Construction began in March 2020 and was scheduled for completion in March 2022, but the project was got over only on Aug 31 this year. The corridor includes 11 km of service roads, two flyovers, four major bridges, 29 minor bridges, a wildlife overpass and a partial cloverleaf interchange. At VOC Port, the Prime Minister inaugurated or laid foundation stones for eight projects worth Rs 753.68 crore. The largest is the Rs 517.19-crore conversion of Berth 7 into a container terminal, which is designed to add 4.2 lakh TEUs in annual capacity.

Madurai: A Madurai ring road completed more than four years behind schedule and a bypass serving Srivilliputhur and Rajapalayam were among the projects Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on Sunday, alongside railway station upgrades and investments at Thoothukudi’s VOC Port.
