RAINWATER ENTERS ADICHANALLUR EXCAVATION SITE
Tuticorin : Recent showers in the Srivaikuntam region have led to rainwater entering excavated trenches and burial urns at the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) ‘C’ excavation site at Adichanallur. Archaeology enthusiasts have been urging authorities for nearly two years to replace the temporary thatched roofing with a permanent structure to protect the site, which has yielded several valuable artefacts, including the much-discussed gold diadem. Located on the banks of the Thamirabarani River, the excavation site remains vulnerable to the elements. Rainwater entered two urns following the recent showers. Enthusiasts have urged authorities to expedite the shelter work, noting that the site is frequently visited by students and members of the public.
Despite assurances from ASI officials last year that a protective shelter would be built to safeguard the site, work began only three days ago with the installation of iron pillars to support a galvanised-sheet roof.
Former DMK minister Thangam Thennarasu criticised the Union government in a post on X over the lack of adequate protection and urged it to take immediate action.
It will be completed within the next 15 days, though rains lashed the area during the work,” a senior ASI official told TOI. Adichanallur is among 15 archaeological sites selected for upgrades under the Desh scheme, and the site is expected to receive significant improvements soon. The official said the pottery and artefacts would not be affected by the rain, as most of the artefacts had already been excavated. We are now working towards a permanent solution,” the official said. “We began work on the permanent shelter three days ago, and it is under way. “For nearly five years, only temporary arrangements were in place.
