Sundarvel said, “The driver failed to show the transit pass required by the mining department for moving minerals. During the inquiry, a tipper truck passed the revenue team at speed. Officials intercepted it and questioned the driver about the material in the vehicle. The driver initially described the load as quarry waste. Officials, however, suspected it was gravel and sought documents establishing its source and permitted destination. Such permits are generally issued for rough or crushed stone. Quarry overburden is usually removed from the upper layer of a mining site. With no record supporting the driver’s explanation, Sundarvel directed him to proceed to Vadipatti police station. The tahsildar followed the truck in his official vehicle. Near Chittampatti junction, the driver suddenly accelerated, made a U-turn and headed towards Samayanallur. The truck travelled at speed along the national highway before entering a narrow road leading to a vacant land near a cinema theatre under construction. The revenue team followed it. Officials found the driver unloading the material at the site. Three men then got out, asked Sundarvel to let them leave and prevented him from stepping out to inspect the consignment. The officials filmed the confrontation on their mobile phones and subsequently lodged a complaint. Vadipatti police registered an FIR and began searching for the driver, the truck and the others involved. Download the TOI App.
