Madurai : Three people, including a 19-year-old college student, were killed and two others seriously injured after an ambulance and a car collided head-on near Tirumangalam in Madurai district on Sunday.
Police said Adithya , 19, of Thoothukudi, was studying at a private college in Erode. He had returned home for a three-day holiday and was travelling back to college in a car with his mother, Sornalakshmi, and elder brother, Moorthy, 21. When the car was passing Sokkhanathanpatti on the Kappalur ring road, a private ambulance coming from the opposite direction allegedly lost control, crossed the road median and crashed into the car.
Moorthy was driving. The impact killed Adithya, Saravana Ganesh and Pradeep on the spot. Sornalakshmi and Moorthy sustained serious injuries and were shifted to a hospital for treatment. Ambulance driver Anand escaped with minor injuries. Madurai district SP N Devanathan visited the accident spot and conducted an inquiry. A police team led by Tirumangalam DSP also inspected the scene. The accident disrupted traffic on the Kappalur-Madurai ring road for more than an hour. Police later removed the damaged vehicles and restored traffic movement.

The ambulance was carrying Saravana Ganesh from a private hospital in Tirumangalam to a private hospital in Madurai for treatment. His friend Pradeep was accompanying him.
