Tirunelveli district police have intensified efforts to curb cybercrime, narcotics trafficking and other criminal activities, resulting in significant recoveries, arrests and preventive action, Tirunelveli district superintendent of police Vishwesh B Shastri said on Saturday.
Addressing reporters, the SP said 114 cybercrime cases have been registered in the district so far, with victims collectively losing around Rs5.8 crore to various online frauds. Police managed to freeze Rs51.5 lakh in suspect bank accounts through timely intervention, of which Rs26 lakh has been recovered and returned to victims. He said that as a part of the crackdown on narcotics, police registered 147 cases related to ganja smuggling and sale since June 1 and arrested 152 people. Police seized 90.5kg of ganja and 3,700 kg of banned gutka products and are also taking steps to freeze bank accounts and attach properties belonging to drug traffickers, he added. During the past three months, 339 history-sheeters were arrested. Police moved court seeking cancellation of bail for 113 offenders, and bail was cancelled for seven of them. A total of 103 persons have been detained under the Goondas Act this year,” said the SP. Through bus beat patrols and anti-drug awareness campaigns, police have reached over 10,000 students in 57 government schools during the past 40 days. Ahead of Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations, police have made security arrangements for installation of 239 idols at 237 locations across the district. About 800 police personnel will be deployed for festival security and immersion processions, the SP added.
