Local residents near the Arasadi area staged a road roko protest on Saturday morning near the railway ground due to unaddressed underground sewage issues that have persisted for over a month.
Because of the irregular drinking water supply, several houses were buying water cans, adding additional expenditure that was difficult for them to afford, shanti, a resident of Chitthalatchi Nagar, said.
Protesters said water stagnation poses severe health risks and makes daily commuting unbearable for the residents. A senior corporation official said drinking water would be provided to the residents via water tankers until the situation is resolved. “Mullaperiyar drinking water connections are being given to houses in the area on a war footing because of a lack of clean water supply from the Cauvery and Vaigai I and II projects,” the official said.
Residents withdrew the protest after corporation officials assured them that immediate measures would be taken to clear pipeline leakages and resolve the issue.
