Singh said the programme seeks to spread environmental awareness beyond classrooms by involving teachers, students, their parents and extended families in conservation efforts. “We shall submit a schedule of training days to the DFO within a day or two to initiate the training sessions at the earliest,” he said.
The programme coincided with the first day of the UP govt’s bag-less day scheme, which aims to supplement classroom learning with extracurricular activities. DFO Singh, plant physiologist Dr SS Dhaka of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture, Meerut, and Wildlife Trust of India biologist Arun Kumar conducted the sessions. Dhaka spoke about declining groundwater levels and highlighted rainwater harvesting and judicious use of groundwater. He also explained the benefits of natural farming and the harmful effects of chemical sprays on human health, pollinators and other beneficial insects. Singh explained the role of forests and trees in absorbing carbon emissions and maintaining ecological balance. He also briefed students about tiger and leopard behaviour and measures to minimise human-animal conflict, given the movement of big cats into villages near the reserve. Training Initiative to Enhance Education in Government Schools
A recent initiative aims to improve education in upper primary government schools, with trained teachers set to educate approximately 76,000 students across 939 schools. The announcement was made following a letter from PTR Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Manish Singh to Basic Shiksha Adhikari Roshni Singh on Saturday.
