Kanpur: A 68-year-old man wanted in an abduction case dating back more than three decades was arrested by Farrukhabad’s Kayamganj police near Achra Crossing on Saturday, bringing an end to his nearly 35-year-long absconding period.
The accused, identified as Nanhe Banjara alias Naseem, had allegedly failed to appear before the court after securing bail in 1991. Police station in charge Vinod Kumar Shukla said Ujagar, a resident of Mohalla Prithvidarwaza, had lodged a complaint on March 9, 1991, alleging the abduction of his wife, Hasina. Police recovered Hasina during the investigation, in which the names of 10 accused surfaced. Police filed a chargesheet in court on June 18, 1991. A special judge of Farrukhabad issued a permanent warrant against him on Oct 28, 2022, following which police intensified their search.
Kuakheda outpost in charge Shiv Kumar Singh said Nanhe had begun living in the Kanth area of Shahjahanpur. Police said he later changed his name, moved to Delhi and worked at a nursery. Police said all the other accused had been arrested and sent to jail but were later granted bail.
After gathering information and tracing him, police arrested Nanhe near Achra Crossing.
Nanhe, a resident of Chhatrai village, secured bail but subsequently failed to appear before the court and remained absconding.
