The Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) in Lucknow has announced the provision of complimentary Pap smear testing utilizing an automated liquid-based cytology system. This initiative aims to enhance early detection of cervical cancer. Additionally, the institute will offer free molecular biomarker tests for patients diagnosed with lung and breast cancer, targeting those who meet specific eligibility criteria. These services are part of KSSSCI’s commitment to improve cancer care and support for patients in need.

The same tests can cost about Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 at diagnostic centres and hospitals, the institute said. More than 500 patients with lung and breast cancer visit the institute for molecular biomarker testing every year. Under DHR-ICMR Advanced Molecular Oncology Diagnostic Services (DIAMOnDS) scheme, eligible lung cancer patients can receive testing for ALK, PD-L1, ROS1 and EGFR biomarkers, while breast cancer patients can receive testing for ER, PR, HER2 and Ki-67, said Dr Deepti Mishra, head of the department of oncopathology.

The oncopathology department has developed a cytology laboratory with facilities for cancer detection and treatment planning, the institute said. The tests are used to identify biological markers that can help determine whether patients are suitable for targeted therapies and guide treatment selection, according to the institute. KSSSCI director Prof MLB Bhatt said access to modern diagnostic technologies supports timely cancer detection and treatment decisions. He said the institute aims to provide advanced diagnostic facilities at an affordable cost to patients.

The tests are funded by the department of health research, ministry of health and family welfare, govt of India, and are being provided free to eligible patients at KSSSCI.

The Pap smear test screens for cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cervical changes before cancer develops, according to the institute.
