Agra : A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death and hanged by a group of villagers in UP’s Mainpuri after being accused of stealing a mobile phone, police said Friday.
An FIR was registered under BNS sections 190 (unlawful assembly), 191 (2) (rioting), 103 (1) (murder) and 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt).
Minutes later, I was told by a villager that Chandrapal had been hanged. SHO Kotwali, Fateh Bahadur Singh, said teams have been formed to apprehend the accused. “They also searched and ransacked my brother’s house. Police were alerted. The cops brought him down and untied the noose. He was dead by then,” Rooplal added. The accused were identified as Phool Singh, his wife Rajni, their son Gaurav, and three relatives Bujesh, Ravindra and Balveer. A police officer added that the circumstances surrounding the death of the daily-wager along with video evidence are being examined and further legal action would be taken accordingly.
The incident took place at Pyarpur village under Kotwali police station on Thursday.
In his complaint, the victim Chandrapal’s brother, Rooplal Kumar, stated at least six villagers, who are currently absconding, forcibly entered the house around 6am. “They first accused my brother of stealing a mobile phone. When he denied, they mercilessly kicked and punched him, and then beat him with wooden sticks till he collapsed. I tried to stop them but they dragged me away towards another house,” Rooplal stated in the FIR.
