In a rare surgery, 7-year-old Kavya, who was born with two different congenital renal ailments, was operated on in a rare single procedure by Dr Gyvi Gaurav
Because a blood vessel was pressing on the ureter, her right kidney had a blockage that prevented urine from flowing normally.
“The procedure, performed under a single round of anaesthesia, eliminated the conventional need for multiple operations and prolonged hospital stays,” said urologist at ApolloMedics Super Speciality Hospital, Dr Gyvi Gaurav. Recently, severe abdominal pain and nausea prompted her family to seek treatment at the hospital, he said. “While robotic surgery for either condition is standard, treating opposite structural abnormalities in both kidneys in a single session, without creating any additional surgical incisions, is rare approach,” the doctor claimed. “A scan conducted one month after the surgery confirmed normal anatomy, no further infections and a smooth recovery, much to the satisfaction of the parents and in line with our expectations,” he said. Hospital CEO Dr Mayank Somani said, “The minimally invasive approach ensured that the child lost just 50 ml of blood and was discharged on the third postoperative day.”
Hailing from a nearby district, the child battled recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) since the age of two. Local clinics treated her symptoms with antibiotics, but the relief was always temporary. Her left kidney had a severe condition in which urine flowed back into the kidney instead of draining properly.
