Varanasi: A 25-year-old man was found hanging in a girl’s rented room in Nawabganj under the Bhelupur police station area of Varanasi on Saturday evening.
Police said the youth allegedly died by suicide after reportedly being distressed over the death of a close friend in an accident a day earlier.
She said that when he expressed his intention to end his life, she repeatedly tried to dissuade him. The youth, a resident of Devramapur village under the Badlapur police station area of Jaunpur, was a family friend of the girl, who belongs to a neighbouring village and lives in the city in a rented room while preparing for competitive examinations. However, he allegedly pushed her out of the room, locked it from inside and hanged himself.
During the initial investigation, the girl told police that the youth was upset over the death of his close friend in an accident on Friday.
The victim’s family reached Varanasi after receiving the information and, in their written complaint, stated the same facts that the girl had told police. Police were investigating the matter after sending the body for postmortem examination, the ACP said. By the time they brought him down, he had died, the ACP added.
The girl then raised an alarm, following which the landlord’s family members and neighbours reached the spot and broke into the room, ACP (Bhelupur) Gaurav Kumar said on Sunday.
