Kanpur: A 35-year-old bookstore operator died after a tractor hit the motorcycle she was travelling on near Devipur village on Shivli-Rura route in Kanpur Dehat on Sunday. Her family allowed police to remove the body around four hours after the accident following assurances of compensation.

The deceased, Usha Pal, a resident of Kudra Virpur Naksiya in the Rura police station area, was heading to her bookstore near an inter college in Devipur after taking a lift from a motorcyclist, said her brother-in-law Devendra Pal. A speeding tractor coming from the Shivli side hit the motorcycle near Devipur village, throwing Usha off the vehicle. She died on the spot, while the motorcyclist fled, allegedly out of fear.

Former MP Anil Shukla Warsi and Maitha tehsildar Santosh Kumar later assured the family of Rs 5 lakh in compensation under the Krishak Bima Yojana, after which the family allowed the body to be taken away.

Maitha SDM Pratibha Mishra said Usha’s family would receive benefits under the Krishak Bima Yojana. Usha’s husband, Sarvesh Pal, works in Punjab. After the accident, her family placed her body by the roadside and demanded compensation to secure the future of her three sons.
