Kanpur: Delhi Police arrested UPSC aspirant Suraj Verma (23) for allegedly making a hoax call claiming that an organisation operating from Pakistan had selected his former roommate for a bomb blast in Delhi.
During the call, he said that an organisation called Jannat-e-Firdaus had been monitoring him and had chosen him to carry out the blast before abruptly disconnecting. During questioning, Suraj told police that he had made the call as a prank to scare Rohit. Kanpur police commissioner Raghubir Lal said that, following an alert from Delhi Police, Kakadev police’s surveillance team found Manoj’s son, Akshat Verma, a NEET aspirant, at the house. Police said Suraj allegedly used the landline at his relative’s house and modulated his voice to suggest that he represented a Pakistan-based organisation. Lal said the local intelligence unit also questioned Suraj before Delhi Police took him into custody.
Suraj allegedly called his former roommate, Rohit Kumar , a fellow civil services aspirant, claiming he was speaking from Lahore. Suman Kumar, a civil services aspirant from Bihar living in Indra Vikas Colony, Mukherjee Nagar, complained to police after his roommate Rohit received the call from an unknown landline number. Investigators traced the number to a private telecom fibre connection registered to Manoj Kumar Verma, a resident of Naveen Nagar in Kanpur’s Kakadev area. A Delhi Police team, coordinating with local police, raided the identified location. Intelligence officials are investigating his possible links.
