Kanpur: Police recovered 2.5 quintals of unlicensed fireworks from a densely populated area with the arrest of one person on Friday. Acting on information during patrolling, police raided the third floor of a belt manufacturing godown behind a Mill Godown near Jaghai Purwa Chauraha in Chauki Ma Bangla and recovered 10 cardboard cartons containing various kinds of fireworks allegedly concealed inside the premises. Police registered a case against the accused under Sections 223 and 288 of BNS and Sections 5 and 9B of the Explosives Act, 1884.
The stock had allegedly been stored for sale at higher prices during Deepawali without complying with legal and safety requirements, posing the risk of a serious accident or explosion, police said. Wasim, son of Shakeel and a resident of Bibi Srivastava Gate, Parade, under Kotwali police station, was present at the godown but could not produce a storage licence, police said. During questioning, he allegedly said his relative Sonu, a resident of Nai Sadak in Moolganj, had kept the fireworks there.
Wasim was arrested later. Sonu allegedly fled, and police are searching for him.
