Meerut : Police claimed to have solved a 26-month-old murder case in Bareilly after arresting a 37-year-old man who allegedly killed his mother and then accused six relatives of the crime, officials said on Saturday. Mahendra Singh was arrested on Sept 30 for allegedly strangling his 55-year-old mother, Rambeti, while she was asleep at his house in Kudda village on Aug 7, 2024. He later lodged an FIR under BNS section 103 (murder), accusing his cousins Natthu Singh, Sarvesh, Surendra, Virendra and Chhotelal.

Police said they “found no evidence” linking the relatives to the murder. They were taken to Delhi for polygraph tests, but the tests “did not yield any incriminating evidence”. Police said Mahendra allegedly confessed during questioning after being confronted with the medical findings. He allegedly told investigators that he had killed his mother as part of a revenge plan arising from a land and family dispute with his cousins. Police said he has five previous cases registered against him, including those related to assault, criminal threats and offences under the Arms Act. Investigation is on,” SP Verma said.

Another relative, Viresh Baba, was subsequently named in the case. Investigators also found that Rambeti had stayed at her son’s house on the night of the murder and that Mahendra had withheld crucial information from police. Mahendra was subsequently sent to jail. None of the relatives named in the FIR was jailed. The charge sheet is yet to be filed. “The material and circumstantial evidence pointed towards Mahendra as the person responsible for the murder. He had also concealed facts from police.
