Meerut: A 40-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by an additional district and sessions court in Moradabad on Thursday for the 2019 death of his wife in a dowry case. Additional district judge Krishna Kumar convicted Nekpal Kumar, a daily wager from Moradabad, in the case.
The victim died at her matrimonial home in Arikheda on March 19, 2019. Her father, Rampal Kumar, a resident of Nagaliya Shahpur in Sambhal district, approached police after he was unable to contact his daughter and alleged that Nekpal had harassed her for dowry since their marriage in 2018. Bilari police registered an FIR against him under IPC sections 498A (cruelty by husband), 304B (dowry death), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation), along with sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Pronouncing the verdict on Thursday, the judge sentenced Nekpal to life imprisonment and directed him to pay a fine of Rs 24,000.
Providing details of the matter, additional district government counsel (ADGC), Brajraj Singh told TOI, “The chargesheet was filed against the husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law. The complaint stated that Nekpal abused and assaulted his wife on the day of the incident, following which she died. However, the mother-in-law and father-in-law died during the trial. The prosecution established that a car had been demanded as dowry.
