The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Meerut: A team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Tuesday inspected Baba Bahauddin Shah mosque near Chaudhary Sarai police outpost, along with other sites named in a complaint over its construction.

The complaint was filed on Aug 31 by Subhash Chandra Tyagi, national convener of Kalki Sena (Nishkalank Dal), with district magistrate Ankit Khandelwal, seeking an inquiry into facts related to the mosque’s construction. A separate complaint filed on Sept 7 alleged illegal encroachment of nearly one-and-a-half bighas of Manokamna Teerth temple land for construction of a musafir khana, with the land claimed to be registered in the name of Jama Masjid.

ADM Satyapriya Singh said an ASI team visited the site to address the complaint, based on the specific points raised in it, and that local revenue and police officers assisted in the process. The team also inspected the ‘musafir khana’ of the Shahi Jama Masjid site on Hasanpur Road. Tehsildar Dhirendra Kumar Singh, along with the revenue team, remained present on site as ASI officials examined other locations mentioned in the complaint. The complaint claimed the land on which the mosque stands belongs to Shahi Jama Masjid, an ASI-protected structure in Sambhal.

The inspection, which included a meeting with local officials and an on-ground survey, lasted over two-and-a-half hours before the team returned.
