HAPUR: A 25-year-old police constable allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his service rifle while on duty on Sunday, officials said. Additional superintendent of police Vineet Bhatnagar said a preliminary inquiry suggested that mental stress or depression could have prompted the constable to take the extreme step. Verma was on duty when he allegedly shot himself with his service rifle, according to officials. The deceased was identified as Ashish Verma, a native of Agra district. Fellow policemen heard the gunshot and rushed to the spot after the incident. Download the TOI App.
The policemen then took Verma to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead at the hospital.
