Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorist squad (ATS) has intensified the crackdown on the network of Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terror suspect Shahzad Bhatti, questioning 24 people across 10 districts since Oct 3 and scrutinising digital devices recovered from six of them. Shahzad Bhatti is a Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terror suspect whose alleged cross-border criminal activities are under investigation by Indian security agencies. Investigators have linked his network to suspected grenade, IED and petrol bomb attacks, targeted killings and reconnaissance of sensitive locations in India. Bhatti has also figured in investigations into cases involving alleged attacks in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, including grenade and IED-related incidents. Security agencies are examining possible links between the network, suspected narco-terror activities and Pakistan-based handlers. Of the 24 people questioned, 18 have been let off after questioning, while investigators are examining the electronic gadgets of the remaining six to establish the nature of their links with the network, an official privy to the investigation said.
ATS teams have been examining the social media activity, mobile phone communications and contacts of those brought under scrutiny, officials said. Officials said the examination is intended to distinguish between people who may have had incidental contact with suspects and those who may have maintained communication with the network. The operation was on till reports last came in. The operation is covering multiple districts like Muzaffarnagar, Bahraich, Shamli, Lakhimpur Kheri and Aligarh. A key focus of the probe is the possible use of social media platforms and mobile phones to establish contact with potential recruits, maintain communication with associates and facilitate activities on the ground. The ATS is also probing whether any of those under scrutiny acted as a local facilitator, provided logistical support or conducted reconnaissance.
