“We must not just tell our children to read books, we must explain the value of books and help them cultivate reading habits,” said Delhi Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu while interacting with students at the Gomti Book Festival on Thursday. Lucknow: Today’s generation has access to an abundance of content, yet time for deep reading is shrinking.
Sandhu said children are not mere consumers of books, they should grow into future writers, poets, researchers and thinkers. Writing enables people to express their thoughts and experiences while literature brings different cultures, languages and perspectives together,” said Sandhu. He said books can bridge boundaries of language, geography, social class and time, allowing readers to encounter experiences and perspectives beyond their own. “While technology can be a useful tool, do not become completely dependent on it for thinking and decision-making,” he said. “The life of Sardar Teja Singh Samundari offers an inspiring example of leadership and contribution to the freedom struggle that young people should read about and understand,” said Sandhu.
He called for strengthening the culture of reading and writing across schools, universities and districts. “Reading helps develop the ability to think, question and create new ideas. Such platforms encourage questions, discussion and dialogue, which helps strengthen the exchange of ideas and contributes to a healthy and open society. He advised students to use AI wisely.
