Kolkata: In a significant operation, the Bengal Anti-Corruption Branch has arrested a police constable along with three alleged touts involved in an extortion syndicate based at the Jhargram police station. This syndicate reportedly generated an average of Rs 5.5 lakh daily through illicit activities.
ACB Investigates Police Extortion Syndicate
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has confirmed that senior police officers are under investigation for their involvement in an extortion racket operating with remarkable efficiency from within a police station.
The operation was exposed following a formal complaint from a transport operator who reported extortion attempts. ACB officials set up a sting operation, resulting in the arrest of three touts caught accepting bribes from a truck owner. During subsequent searches, investigators seized around Rs 5.5 lakh in cash.
The arrested individuals include Pramanik, who is now in custody. ACB investigators are conducting forensic examinations on digital devices seized from the suspects and are interrogating them to uncover the full scope of the syndicate. Their efforts focus on determining the duration of the operation, the volume of vehicles involved, and identifying any senior officials who may have aided or benefited from the illicit activities.
