Parents need to groom kids for AI age, start discussions from dining: The wider industry impact

Kolkata: It is time for parents to groom their kids in harmony with the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and this must start at the dining table, Vineet Nayar, founder and chairman of Sampark Foundation, told an audience of 600 people on Friday. So, when AI technology came in radiology, the number of radiologists has increased by 20%.

Instead of preaching about your history or value system, you (parents) have to create the dining table as a place where you create curiosity, experimentation, research orientation,” said Nayar. “Instead of fearing AI as a tool for layoff, human resources of any company, be it any business house or service sector, ought to think out of the box and use this tool to scale greater heights,” he said. His message for the young generation is “Winning in the age of AI means playing a different game, one only humans can win…AI should make humans more brilliant, not redundant. ” “The AI technology can be used to increase productivity. So, the only differentiation using AI will come if you know how to use it to do something that the others are not doing,” Nayar told TOI before the launch of his book, ‘Humans First Machines Second’. Nayar pointed out that “greatest danger of AI is not smarter machines, it is humans slowly losing belief in their own uniqueness”. Robotic surgeries have not replaced good surgeons, rather it is them who use the technology to conduct more surgeries,” he said. As for mistakes often made by AI, Nayar said, “This is where comes the role of human intelligence.

“Parenting in the age of AI is important. The discussion should start from dining table to inspire children to be curious about AI and eventually become experimental and innovative with its help. Nayar, the former CEO and vice-chairman of HCL Technologies , also felt that AI, if used for innovation, can pave the way for growth of an organisation or a corporate and create new opportunities. Citing examples of Mahatma Gandhi’s response to violence with non-violence and MS Dhoni’s turning a yorker into a major scoring option by inventing the ‘Helicopter’ shot, Nayar stated, “These are counterintuitive responses that AI cannot generate. The basic principle of growth of any organisation is based on differentiation. If everybody can increase productivity and everybody can reduce cost, there is no differentiation. His AI movement for future progress, which had started from Delhi in Aug, covered six cities with Kolkata being its concluding destination. He is set to carry on the same movement in other countries like Paris, New York, London and Singapore. In this context, his view is that “AI may change the rules. But only humans decide who wins. Humans have created AI for their own use”. “The opportunity lies in using technology to solve something that has not been solved yet. AI can’t make humans redundant.”
